I cant believe it the house in the picture above is where i went to school in the 1960's,up the steps right in front of them was the dinning room to the right of that was the staff room.To the left were class rooms and on the floor above were the dormatries. There wre steps on the right that went down on to Colley Lane, and on the side was a path that went down the side to a cottage wre on of the teachers used to live and that had a drive which went on to the main road and the heath was over the road, There was a sweet shop there, if i am not wrong there was a pub on the corner which went towards the heath aswell. I could go on and on it just unbelieable, i dont knon if it is still school as i live in Jersey in the Channel Island it would be good to know.I was in 7half acers which was quite large.

I use to go to Pine End Schoolin the sixties and have fond memories as well, just like Melody Taylor, I wounder if she remembers me. I use to love running around the vast grounds, we also had a gardening patch, inside the house was also beautiful, it was all wooden panelling, those stairs going to the rooms and dormatries. Melody when we went down to that little path to were the staff lived as well we use to have a class there doing cooking. Looking at that picture reminds me of some great days of my childhood, oven the heath we use to go cycle riding, go up the lane towards the hill and the farms, that School helped me to creative. How can I get picture of the above to show my children.

Sandra Stapleton as was now living in France, I was at Pine End during the early 60's. I think the teacher that lived in the grounds was Mr. Dark and his family. Also used to doing sewing lessons in the same room as the cookery. Brilliant school, amazing staff, hope all the girls that went there have good memories.

David H. J.Schenck from Salfords, REDHILL posted this comment on Saturday 23 July 2011 20:07:00.

'Pine End' was originally a magnificent timbered residence, with oak panelled walls on some interior rooms, designed in 1925-6, by the distinguished architect, Blunden Shadbolt (1879-1949) R.I.B.A., who specialised in designing 'Tudor Style' buildings from ancient materials.

During the later years of his life, Blunden Shadbolt and his family lived in the old granary that he designed and built at Salfords, Surrey in 1933 for a material cost of ?28, and which has been the home of my late wife, daughter and I since 1953.

'Pine End' was built for a Mr William D. Anderson, who was first listed there in 1926, with the telephone number Reigate 602.

The last resident at 'Pine End' was a Mr Alan Chambers who left the property in 1954. In 1955, it became 'Pine End School' and this continued until 1992, when it was finally closed down by the government. It then became a residential care home, now known as 'Reigate Beaumont Care Home' and part of the Barchester Group.

It is really wonderful to see how the original timbered house with its later extensions has been so carefully maintained over the years, and I send my warm good wishes to the residents, the staff and the management - not forgetting the 'old Girls' of 'Pine End School' May God bless you all!

Ann Olson from West London, England posted this comment on Monday 17 October 2011 16:17:00.

I went to Pine End School in the 1950's. A FABULOUS House. It was similar to an Elizabethan interior. A great staircase & wood panelling throughout the house. Amazed it was built in the 20th century! The Head was a Mr Yates. The school uniform was Grey skirt.sweater & Royal blue blazers. There were 10 girls @ the school all from London. A Mr Ward was the gardener & had twin boys. I was allowed out to go to Infants school in Reigate. (cannot remember name) I then went onto the Priory School in Reigate. I left age 12 yrs. I remained friends with a Mr & Mrs FALK until their deaths in the 1990's. who were governors of the school, they lived in Reigate.

It was a VERY happy time of my life. The pub @ the bottom of Colley Lane on the main road was called 'The Black Horse'. I have been back many times & Reigate has completely changed, no Blacksmith on the main road between Reigate town & Colley lane. My last visit was seeing Pine End being gutted. The Ariel photo was taken whilst I was @ Pine End & we were given a post card size copy. Often wondered who built the 2 other wonderful houses with much glass in them further up Colley Lane. Yes, Happy Memories when I think of Pine End.

I went to Pine End school in the early 1960's Just before we had a new headteacher... Mr King.. and Mr Dark. I absolutely loved the house and grounds... and visited the place and saw Miss Shaw, housemother... just before they stopped using it as a school. Mr and Mrs King and Mr and Mrs Dark... are all doing fine.

Hannah Norris from Seascale posted this comment on Wednesday 20 June 2012 22:27:00.

I was Pine End in the late 60's and really loved it there; living in the country, the fine Tudor-style buildings and grounds, and the staff were very good to us. I particularly remember Mr & Mrs King, Miss Shaw, Miss Batson and Miss Leeson and Mr Stoneley; even Miss Attwater one of the cooks! My name then, was Anna Bromley, and I left in 1971 to go to a comprehensive school, when I was 14, where I eventually did A level Art English & Biology. I trained as a nurse in the 1990s after being a stay-at-home mum to my four children.

Our dormitories were all named after trees: Cedar, Sycamore, Beech (Elm?), Pine and Poplar. I loved the grounds where we played tennis and hockey, and we had the chance to have our own bit of garden. I especially liked the Art Room and Domestic Science centre, where I learned to cook and sew. I still love cooking now, and we often have friends & family staying, as I live on the Lake District coast. The food there was really nice, and on your birthday you could choose the menus for the day, and have a birthday cake!

On Sunday evenings the Gideons often used to come, and I still have my little Bible (I'm now a Church Minister & hospital Chaplain), so I think my faith started at the school. I have been back to the Mill Church in the old windmill on the heath a couple of times.

I also remember walking into town often, swimming twice a week, being a Red Cross cadet, going to the pictures, and having coffee in The Pantry teashop on Saturdays. I'm still a fan of good coffee, thanks to these sessions!

In about 1970 the gym was built, and we also had horse-riding lessons on Reigate Heath. In my late teens I took exams and taught riding at my local stables. Who remembers the Hurlingham Games? Because we were such a small school (25 girls then), we didn't do that well, much to the dismay of the PE teacher who's name escapes me; but we were great at the annual Swimming Gala.

And the socials! Going off to boy's schools in the little minibus to have tea and dance until 'late' Ha-ha!!!

Happy days, and I'm very thankful for them.

For the attention of ANN OLSON ex of Pine End..

I too went to Pine End I left in 1956 aged 15. I remember you so well, I can see your face in my mind like it was yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw your name here, like you I loved that place the happiest 3 years of my young life, I have tried so hard over the years to find others who were with us then with no success then up you pop out of no-where LOL I was known as Jacqueline Mead.

Everything you describe is a mirror image of what I remember, I once went to visit Mr and Mrs Yates at their home in Leatherhead in Surrey when my first 2 children were tots, what a lovely pair they were too, Mr Yates was very strict at school, I used to love taking Buster the boxer for walks in the grounds :-)) I remember you used to go out to school, the priory I think, I stayed behind for school. Do you remember any of these names..Pat Christou, Audrey Kellogg, Gwen Osbourne, Irene Taylor, Pauline Chapman, Chris Carney (she left very early on) Mary Mc'Ginly, and some who's names escapes me at the moment.

I remember every detail of the house. Christine was the cook, I remember Miss Scofield she used to love playing classical music to us in school time unofficially. There is so much I could talk about of those times at Pine End.

I am now hoping you get to see this Ann and maybe get in touch, I am on Facebook as Jackie Bugeja if at all possible would you look me up, I would love that.

Was great to see your name here Ann.

With the kindest regards.

Jackie.

just re read all the comments. such happy memories. I was down south last year and decided to go see the old school. as I walked into the drive all sorts came in my mind about happy things that happened there. the big weeping willow has gone, used to sit under it in the summer reading of just chatting. the entrance door is still the same. I was upset to see they had taken out the beautiful stairs, so sad. the matron of the home let me have a tour, very good of her, the dining room looks more or less the same, one more door into the kitchen far left. the tv room, opposite the front door is a lounge now. the classrooms to the right down a hallway are now residents rooms, all partitioned. no big social room where we had our dances. the upstairs is all modernised and cut up into smaller rooms. one thing that is still there is the Tuck cupboard under the stairs lol, storage cupboard now, and the stairs leading up to the attic. I wend around the house to the gardens. different but familiar, no little pond, no paddling pool, no swings at the top, no veg garden and no raised little plot we tended to. pub still there, I went in to eat. heath still the same. I went up to the old windmill church on the heath. that is the same but a new golf building next to it. I felt happy and sad at the end of the day. sorry to go on but thought I would just share with all whom reads.

Ann Cruickshank I remember Margaret Forsyth I was there in the 50s and left 1963 and Winifred Cottrill was there with us. We use to get up to some naughty things us 3 would go out to the pond and get the frog spawn and bring it in and put it in the girls that wasn't very nice that week. Oh god we got up to some naughty things but it was young girls having a laugh. Those were the best days of our life we were so well looked after there and we cried when we had to leave. I left in 1961 or 1962 I just remember coming home and starting a new school. I don't think any other school would have looked after us like pine end did. I could talk about pine end all week and still have stories to say..
