Unfortunately, evidence suggests that the building shown in this image was not the former Marquis of Granby public house. Both historic mapping and careful study of the other known picture of the older marquis of Granby public house (which is certainly of the pub, given the inn sign outside) clearly shows that the pub was a separate, probably 17th century building, to the immediate west of the cottage shown above, fronting the road. It survived until replaced by the current pub, which is set back from the road frontage. Given that the modern pub is mid 20th century, it is somewhat surprising that there is no image of the older pub surviving. However, one may be out there somewhere...

Hooley Cottage WAS used as a pub several hundred years ago. There was a special cellar for beer kegs. It may have been only used for a time but it certainly was used for farm labourers from the estate.

Thanks for your comment Fiona. The building was a residential house when built at the end of the 16th century and appears to have remained so during its lifetime. Having carried out extensive research on the cottage, there is no evidence of past usage as a public house - especially as the actual Marquis of Granby public house was most certainly right next to it in a separate building. Furthermore, there is no cellar that I am aware of within the cottage - certainly none that was evident during the historical/architectural investigations carried out in 2018. If you know where a cellar was in the house (presumably in the later rear outshot/extension parts?), do let me know by reply on this thread.

Hello I was the owner of the cottage for many years and there was a cellar out the back designed for bear barrels. In 2018 I was still the owner of the property. What historical searches were these? The house was used as a pub during the rebuilding of the pub. There was a concreted over cellar entrance as far as I can remember. The house had been totally reconfigured internally by. Builder in the 1080s.
