The tennis courts in center right of picture and orchard beside it and further garden behind greenhouses was sold in about 1959/60 to make way for development in the now Fir Tree Walk.

Mandy Thompson from Peterborough posted this comment on Saturday 09 October 2021 12:38:03.

What a fabulous picture. I lived at 1 South Walk from 1959 until 1975 and this photo pre-dates that by several years. It does not include the pre-fab canteen, or the netball and tennis courts which were there when I was at RCS (1964-1971). Also amazing coincidence that the photo was uploaded on my birthday. Thanks

Marion Howser from near Peterborough posted this comment on Saturday 13 November 2021 21:41:36.

I was there from 1951 and the pre-fab canteen was already there. There was an entrance to the old air-raid shelter on the front lawn - it was said this linked up with the tunnels under the town.

I remember the entrance to the air raid shelter but it was not accessible at all by the time I was at school there. There were a lot of stories about tunnels joining up (and of course The Castle Grounds are very near) but my mum, Audrey Ward, who knew a lot about the local history and had been down all the tunnels that were known about, said that most of the stories had no basis in fact.

Geraldine Foy from Horley posted this comment on Thursday 28 July 2022 10:10:39.

This photo may be in the 1930s or early 1940s. To the right of the building (where tennis courts were later built) you can see the gardens where the girls grew flowers, and in wartime vegetables. The pre-fab canteen wasn't erected until the 1940s. The pavilion is possibly in the top left corner, and that was erected in 1935.

My family lived at both 3 South Walk and later 20 The Crescent, Chart Way in the 1960’s to 1980’s - I can see both in the photo with their mid century ‘dig for Britain’ vegetable patches. Great photo.
