Deerings Road, and Eversfield Road were 'developed' on the land of Great Doods estate which was sold off following the fire which destroyed the House in early 1900s. The road here looks well developed and so I would guess this couldn't be earlier than 1910.

My grandfather's house no. 57 (directly above horse's head) was built in 1901. Plot cost £150, house, by J Hodge & Son £519!! So I think the picture could be 5 years earlier than 1910.

No 54,on the other side from no 57 was also built in 1901. I lived there in the 1960s. It was called Olde Cleeve and had the date on the eaves

re comment 3 from Keith Tothill. I also lived in no.54 from '47 to '57. In fact your father bought 54 from my father!! You had lived further down Deerings Road with your parents and sister Christine if my memory serves me.

I lived at 54 from the 70,s through to the late 80,s. My parents bought it from the Crusader Insurance company who acquired it hoping to demolish it and build a new road but they never got the go ahead. When we moved in there was a huge coal burner in the dining room and a fantastic garden.

Thanks, Robert you are correct, we lived at No 47 with my Grandmother who had owned 47 with her husband. How interesting Beckett, I had heard that there were plans by a company to develop the area. Still not happened even though I can't really see why not being myself a Town Planner. The house is now very smart with several extensions -at the rear and the side. I don't recall any coal burner. However, we heated the house with coal in the front room - the lounge. The coal was stored in the cellar. My father was a great gardener and yes it was a fine garden with originally flowers and lawns at the front part of the back garden and beans potatoes carrots, etc at the far rear. We even played badminton on a lawn close to the old orchard. When we moved in, I recall that in the cellar there was a row of servants bells

Great to hear your comments Keith. I remember the cellar which had two sections and the servants bells down there. The garden had a wonderful large shed which we used to play in as children. At the top of the house was a huge attic and sky window. We eventually got a huge ladder and I remember discovering it for the first time. It was an amazing house which I am sure has now been completely transformed.

Great Photos. Fantastic history. Would anybody care to remember where the pond was in relation to Eversfield Road and Deerings Road. Was there just one pond? Were the cellars dry or damp?

54's cellars were dry. During and just after the war I lived at 74 (maternal grandparent's house)that had a v wet cellar and the coke fired boiler was down there! Don't remember any ponds, there was an emergency fire brigade pre-fabricated Braithwaite tank during the war erected on what was then a vacant plot the first house in Rushworth Road.

I checked on th e1895 OS map for the area and there were no ponds in the large curtilage of Great Dodds on which Deerings Road was built after the House was demolished. As Robert says the cellars of 54 Deerings Road where I lived (not the cellar!) were always dry

I am wondering if anybody can help.. We currently live in 75 Deerings Rd - which is at the end of a drive/lane that runs next to the alms houses. Does anybody have any information on when the original house was built and why? It doesn't feel like it was originally meant to be a part of Deerings Road?

I lived in 3 houses in D R 74,54,57 from 1944 to 1966! Your house was lived in by the Kellaway family. I went to school with their children Michael, Julia and Nina. Speak to your next door neighbour he was also at school with us and has lived there his whole life and I think his Dad was an architect.

Correction to my earlier comment. Lots of changes since I was there, after no.69 there was an orchard until no. 71 this is the person you need to speak to. Kellaways at no. 73. Your house was not there at all it is on the site of the coach house of a Victorian mansion called "Dilkusha" which faced on to Doods Park Road. "Dilkusha" its grounds and coach house were all derelict c.1950 which we children all made good use of in the holidays. (No. 78 was the childhood home of the broadcaster Jean Metcalfe)

Thanks Robert. Is the neighbour you are refering to called David? Your explanation makes sense as when we renovated the middle of the house, we found what looked like coach house beams and windowa sandwiched between the walls, with the glass still in the windows!

I lived at number 47 from Birth (1945) with Mum, Dad and Brother until about 1952 before moving to Wray Park Road. Mrs Fergusson lived at 45, and the Knights at 49. I remember the Michelmores (Cliff & Jean) leaving for their Honeymoon from the house on the bend at the top of the road. They were married I believe in the Methodist Church next to Wraggs Cycle Shop in the town.

further to Anthony's comment's: You must have lived near the Martin brothers and opposite Mrs Freeman with her twin daughters. The Knights at 47 were another family from mine, must have made problems for the post man, there was a post box in the road then! Jean Metcalfe no. 78 The Moorings married Cliff Michelmore as Anthony said. Jean's father and I used to catch the bus (406/414) to Redhill he to station to London me to school.
