The original Currington shop around 1939? Chas Hodgeson, the owner is 2nd from the right,
with 'Bert' Twyman on the right. It was quite commonplace for a customer coming into the shop,
when asked by an assistant if they could be helped, would reply 'I'll wait for Mr Twyman to
serve me please', to the point that there was often a queue just for him.
With thanks to Anthony Twyman.

You say 'the original 5 Warren Road'. Were the numbers changed? In 1939 my Father and parents lived in 21 Warren Road which I can't find. One of the houses where he lived was bombed, and I have photos of the house which is similar to some of the other Warren Road houses. (They also lived in Cockshott Road and Holmesdale Road but the houses look different) Is there any history of bombing in Warren Road? Is that why the row of shops is no longer there?

Currington's as it was in the 50's when it occupied numbers 1 to 7 Warren Road, until it closed
in the late 60's, having been sold to a firm of builders from Epsom a few years earlier. After 30
years service my Dad was given two weeks notice of the closure. As Saturday Boy at Currington's
these were some of the best days of my life. Currington's stocked pretty well everything one
could possibly need, and if they didn't have it they would order it directly.
With thanks to Anthony Twyman.

My Dad worked for Curringtons in the '50s. I remember him working in the the workshop at the back. We lived in one of the flats (number 3, I think) above the shop until I was 7 (1959). My Mum used to but broken biscuits from Reigate Dairy across the road. She worked as a secretary at Wray Park Garages.

Warren Road / Mark's Street, Reigate.

Comment 1

Karl Steadman from Redhill posted this comment on Sunday 07 April 2013 12:21:00.

I grew up in 26 Warren Road in the 70's. On the wall of the house shown in the picture, there is a sign stating Bennetts Boundary. Can anyone let me know what this is/was?

Comment 2

Richard Symonds from Horsham posted this comment on Sunday 03 May 2020 16:33:41.

Exactly opposite this house, on the other corner of Mark Street with Warren Road, stood the former Warren Arms (No 16A Warren Street) now called the Old Brewery. The old Beerhouse closed in 1913.
