O/T of the above picture ...Can anyone remember or was a member of the Cromwell Road Music Club around 1948/49 ish. It was not exactly a 'CLUB' but rather a full on large youth orchestra. We played at the Albert Hall one year in the Harvest Festival and used to give concerts at the Central as it was known, or Central Hall. Redhill. I was one of four trumpeters, a girl I had the hots for was second trumpet.........almost 70 years ago!!!!!!!............Strewth

Hello Irene. I knew you when I was at Cromwell Road school. I was Barbara Whiting then. I was looking at photos of Meadvale, where I was born, then, browsing through all the very local places, came upon this wonderful picture. I do hope you got a copy from someone.

Keith Fuller from Harrogate,Nth.Yorks. posted this comment on Wednesday 16 July 2014 21:38:00.

The two ladies in the first two comments went to Cromwell Road School and I wondered if the date could possibly match the time I was in the Church Lad's Brigade (St.Mathews Church)and had quite a bit of contact with some of the pupils from the school. This was in the 1947 to 1951 period after which I left school and had to move with my parents back to Sussex. Most names escape me now, but Bob Robinson(and his girlfriend) from a Cromwell Road address,Alan Durrent, and another girl who helped, with her mother at Church Lad's events - Edna Bushnell, from Brook Street(?). I lived in Salfords (Woodside Way) from 1942 until 1951.

I'd love to hear anything about any of them - so many years have passed!!

I have put a group photograph of the C.L.B. Band from c.1947 on the St.Mathews Church part of the web, and welcome any contact.

Regards,

Keith Fuller.

I went to Cromwell Rd primary school in the early 60's. Just visiting UK now and went looking for my old address 21 Station Rd Redhill and of course the school. When did it close? Can anyone fill me in on a bit of history over the past 50 yrs in the area?

Peter Miles from Horsham, West Sussex posted this comment on Saturday 23 December 2017 16:33:58.

I am too interested in past history of this school as I went there from 1957-1964. I have fond memories of the place. It was at first difficult to track-down, as forgot the road it was on, so long ago. Then discovered it was the "Longmead Adult Education Centre". It appears to be sold now (October 2017) to developers? Sad if they knock this very old Victorian School down, has amazing architecture. No doudt the devlopers will vandelise it by knocking it down, seems all boarded-up right now. We had a cake shop right next to the school, selling what they called, Penny Nelson's, what we know as bread pudding ..... hee hee Whatever happened to my old mate Stephen Fenner .... so long ago now mate !! PS. I was also in the Church Lads Brigade in the mid 1960's from what I recall.

The opening of the Redhill British Restaurant. 1941.

Comment 1

Peter Burgess from Crawley posted this comment on Sunday 19 February 2012 19:07:00.

When attending Cromwell Road School in the early 1960s we went to the old British Restaurant for our school dinners. After it had closed down we went to the hall in the Redhill Congregational Church for lunch.

Irene Howlett (Lawrence) from Redhill posted this comment on Saturday 09 February 2013 10:54:00.

I agree with Peter Burgess's comment. My sister and I had school dinners there in the 50's.We were also born in Cromwell Road and remember cattle being driven down our road to an abattior which must have been very close to the site of the British Restaurant!

When I lived at Ranelagh Road I remember the terrible smell of a Tannery somewhere near Cromwell Road.

I can remember going from Cromwell Rd school down for school dinners. Some much loved meals but others I still can not stand. lat 1950's early 1960's

I lived in Ranelagh Road and belonged to an orchestra around 1953. I believe it was called the Cromwell Road music Club. It was in fact a full blown youth orchestra, who remembers that? We practised in a School near Merstham and plaYed a few times in the Central Hall

George and Dragon. Unknown date. Unknown publisher.

Comment 1

Peter hill from Rochester posted this comment on Tuesday 19 February 2013 21:31:00.

Used to live opposite the George and go to Cromwell Rd school next door, this was in about1956. Used to use the pub when I got older,I remember the licensee as being

Jim & Jen Dancey (I think) there parents also owned a pub in London Rd, but I can't remember the name, later on the licensee was Jim Dowber, lovely old traditional pub in those days. Jim Dowber went onto run "The Station" at Earlswood, before moving to a country pub that escapes my memory

Comment 2

Barbara Pennell from Truro posted this comment on Thursday 21 February 2013 22:36:00.

You're right Peter, it was the Danceys who ran the pub. I had my wedding reception there !!!! I am also in touch with Jim Dowbers' daughter Sally. I was Barbara Whiting then, attending Cromwell Road school and remember the Restaurant and school meals there.

Ruth CORNWELL from Hartland Devon posted this comment on Tuesday 30 August 2016 11:53:00.

The pub that the danceys run in London road redhill was I think the queens or the queens arms that may have been the son whichever it was they later went on to run the desert rat at lesbourne road Reigate.I at one point went out with one of the sons in the 60s who was another jim or as he was known jimmy.

Geoff Spooner from Horsham posted this comment on Saturday 24 February 2018 20:33:19.

It was the Queens Head not the Queens Arms. Sadly long gone

RUTH cornwell from Bideford posted this comment on Sunday 25 February 2018 09:47:06.

Ah yes the queens head knew it was the queens something.sad to say redhill and Reigate as they were have all long gone, may have in this day seemed old and scruffy but had some good times then and it was never boring.i lived in Reigate always went to redhill to meet up with friends and Saturday at the market hall to see brilliant bands many who eventually went on to be very famous.so glad that I spent my youth in those years,it was always exciting and interesting.
